Travel with rich uncle

Me and Cancer (19 - Summer Travels)
After my oldest daughter graduated, she wanted to travel the world before she entered medical school, and we obliged, considering it her graduation gift. I rushed to the doctor as soon as I could, to ask about the possibility of me traveling. When he told me it would be no problem, it dispelled the fog of uncertainty surrounding my heart. In the past I was at the mercy of my chemotherapy, but this summer I would take the initiative and travel.
In early June 2013, just after the two girls started their summer break, LG flew with them to Beijing, went to Xinjiang, and summitted the “youngest sister” peak (5355 m) in the Siguniang “Four Girls” mountains in the Ngawa Prefecture in Sichuan.
The following are photos taken by LG:

The three of them left home on Wednesday. Of course I wanted to go with them, but my physical condition wouldn’t allow it. Ultimately I could entertain myself, having the freedom to do whatever I wanted, and would recuperate in preparation to meet my friends and family in Greece. After dinner on Thursday, I felt a dull pain in my abdomen. Why was I starting to have problems as soon as they left? I immediately asked my friend XW who was a doctor whether I needed to go to the hospital (once you’re bitten by a snake, you’re afraid of ropes for ten years). She recommended taking Tylenol, and after I took it the pain decreased. When I got in bed at 9, the pain reared its head again, so I decided to take the stronger painkillers prescribed to me, hoping to ease the pain and fall asleep. Unfortunately, I started to vomit, and I was completely helpless. It was all over, the tour of Greece was now perhaps out of the question as well. That night I struggled until 2 in the morning. I clearly remember asking God to help me, and then passed out. When I woke up it was 7 AM on Friday and the pain was gone, leaving only a slight tenderness. Isn’t that wonderful?! The most important thing was that I had learned this way to stop bowel obstructions in their tracks in the early stages. On Friday I went to practice the Forty-Eight Forms with my qigong friend as usual, and for lunch I only dared eat watery congee.
On June 12, I finished my third cycle of Avastin and Abraxane, and a week later on June 18 I began my travels with N59 face masks, flying through London to Athens, Greece where I would meet my daughters and my brother’s family of three. All of our travel plans were taken care of by my brother and his Greek business partner of ten years, and I’m deeply thankful to them. What particularly moved me was that it wasn’t just my daughters that picked me up at the airport, but my brother’s family of three and the beautiful Greek M and handsome S were there as well. I was very flattered. (LG had to make money and support our family, so he returned home on his own).
The second day under the leadership of M and S, we toured the Acropolis in the morning. The sun and wind were fierce, but it didn’t keep me from being giddy with excitement. In the afternoon we went to the Acropolis Museum, and I took many breaks. After visiting the National Archaeology museum and the Monastiraki Flea Market, I was exhausted, too tired even to speak, and my eyelids were too heavy to keep them apart. Fortunately M noticed and suggested that we retire immediately. Back at the hotel, I vomited a little bit, took Tylenol, and fell asleep. I thought, tomorrow I won’t go anywhere; I’ll rest.
It turned out that everyone else was exhausted as well, and had therefore decided on the third day to visit the Mediterranean Sea and lay on the beach.
The fourth day we flew to Santorini. Through the cooperative efforts of my brother and my older daughter, we rented a manual car to tour the island, and we liked its simple beauty and atmosphere. We then boarded a ship to visit a active volcanic island (I didn’t change groups!). While sailing we watched the sunset, and I captured a picture of a happy old couple under the sunset. I thought it was a good picture, so I approached them and asked them whether they wanted me to mail them a copy, and they said yes. At the time, a saxophone solo gently floated in the breeze. Without any warning, the old man gently lifted up my hand and asked me to dance. I hesitated, thinking “I can’t bring disgrace to Chinese people”, but I smiled and began to slowly dance to the music. After the music ended, applause erupted from all sides, because we were the only two people dancing. At that moment, I deeply felt that human compassion is everywhere on earth, one just has to discover it.

On the sixth day we departed Santorini on schedule and flew to Mykonos. It was then that I truly appreciated the beauty of white buildings reflected off the blue sea. I saw more nice scenery in the distant windmills from our seaside restaurant. No matter where you looked, there were pleasant sights and alluring beaches. But I still prefer Santorini.

Three days later we took a boat back to Athens, and M and S greeted us again at the pier. I returned the next day to Los Angeles, my daughters flew to Rome to continue their world travels, my brother’s family flew back to Hangzhou, and the Greece trip thus came to a successful close. I’m sure that, for the beautiful scenery, for the delicious food, and for M and S, I will be back.
